San Bonaventura is located on the Palatine Hill amidst the ruins of the Roman imperial palaces. The drawing was probably made during Frommel's first trip to Italy in 1812. The artist is looking south-east towards the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the church of Santo Stefano Rotondo. The draughtsman's attention is unevenly distributed across the drawing: Only the landscape with the ruins leading from the foreground to the middle ground on the left and the architecture in the background as well as the palm tree and the flowering agave on the right are finely executed. The unfinished parts give the drawing a modern feel, despite the precision of the rendering.
