We know when the small picture was painted, but neither by whom nor where: ‘26 April 37 Nachmittag 5 Uhr’ (‘26 April 37 afternoon 5 o'clock’) is carved at the bottom. The landscape is still wintry, the trees are bare, the air is cold, only on the small island is there some fresh greenery. The depiction seems to dispense with effect and yet is carefully balanced - one might even wonder whether the branchless tree was not added by the artist as a counterweight. The earlier attribution to the Dresden painter Christian Friedrich Gille is doubtful, but Dresden is not implausible as the painter's local attribution.
