Free spaces. 110 Ways to encounter the World

Carl Blechen polarised. In 1828/29, he travelled to Italy, which had a lasting influence on his work. Under the impression of the glistening light, he produced hundreds of drawings and oil studies, which were incorporated into less idealised landscape paintings. He also created oil sketches on site in Brandenburg and the Brandenburg forests. Blechen gave his landscapes an idiosyncratic tone: Here, the front trunks of the light forest are cropped, giving the scene something closed off. The glowing sky is not free, but is reflected in the lake in an almost supernatural gold colour.
