Carl Wagner spent the summer of 1823 in southern Italy. He travelled here with Grospietsch, among others, who is represented in the exhibition with a view of the isle of Capri. Wagner presents a related motif in a different technique and impression. His fine watercolour shows the Vesuvius lying behind the sea in a wide landscape format. The water and volcano only take up half of the sheet. The sky remains white, while the land, sea and smoke appear in various shades of blue, grey and green. In addition to the place and time, Wagner also noted the situation after a rainstorm and specific colours on the sheet.
