Friedrich Gauermann was one of the most popular painters of his time with his landscapes, hunting and animal Paintings. A large number of oil studies exist, especially from his early period. On the reverse a label with the inscription: ‘Wasserstudie. Quart, Jugendarbeit’. (Waterstudy. Quart, youth work) refers to the estate auction. Gauermann painted the brook bed with a thin application of paint in warm brown-green tones and laid the water over it with quick, impasto brushstrokes in white and blue-green. It is possible that the dry first coat of paint made it possible to paint in several layers in front of nature in one sitting.
