In August 1818, Johann Adam Klein travelled from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden with his friends Friedrich Philipp and Heinrich Reinhold, Johann Christoph Erhard and Ernst Welker. The Watzmann and one of Berchtesgaden's churches can be seen at the back right. The etching was created from slightly altered watercolours made on the journey. The hikers have their drawing equipment, folding stool and drawing board with them. The etching is a document of an artist's journey as well as a picture of friendship, without sentimental exuberance. The proof-print shown here still lacks the later added explanation and dedication to the friends.
