The view looks south-east from Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland towards the snow-covered Jungfrau massif. On the right is the strikingly shaped Niesen. In 1818, Schilbach produced templates for a series of aquatint prints during a trip to Switzerland. The present study corresponds to a print from this series. It is not known whether Schilbach supplied it as a template or made it for himself. The precisely painted estate on the left contrasts with more fleeting landscape elements. Such studies were not always created completely en plein air; sometimes that just would have taken too long.
