In Sestri Levante, Morgenstern created a series of oil sketches of rocks and coastal areas. The focus of the large-format study shown here is on the characteristic mood of the light. The parts of the picture are executed with varying degrees of differentiation: The mountains extending in the background are vividly emphasised and stand out sharply against the blue sky. Separated from this by a zone of green trees, the foreground with the banks of the river is rendered in a coarser style until the brushstroke in the right foreground dissolves completely into the abstract.
