The outstanding Draughtsman Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld had an enormous impact with his project of a bible in pictures. First together with Overbeck, then alone, he produced 240 illustrations for the Bible, which were reproduced as wood engravings. The book was complete in 1860. Our sheet is the first known draft of sheet 35. Further intermediate stages have been preserved up to the final version. The greatest changes were made to the main female characters, who were increasingly wrapped in flowing robes and veils by the draughtsman. Finally, the naked boy was draped in a scarf.
