Mont St Michel is located on a small island off the coast. Gudin painted the Gothic abbey as a silhouette, but emphasised its architectural character with opposing brushstrokes. The path, carts, animals and peasant and an almost dabbed tree also remain dark. The luminous sky extends over two thirds of the oil study. Gudin did not leave it at the magnificent play of colours from light blue to shades of yellow, orange and red, but also relied on the effect of the paintbrush, which sets the clouds in motion and gives them substance through the different densities of paint applied.
