Views out of the window are a favourite motif of Romanticism. Traugott Faber, who was born, studied, lived and worked in Dresden, looks out of the dormer window of a Country Inn just outside the city. His gaze sweeps far across the landscape and yet he is able to perceive details. Faber combines three pictorial genres: the interior with the nearby window frames, the landscape painting with meadows, trees, river and mountains and finally the veduta of Dresden. At the same time, the painting thematises a tension between inside and outside, the familiar and the unfamiliar, home and a longing for faraway places.
