The Piazza delle Erbe is the centre of Verona and one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. With the Palazzo Maffei behind us, we look south-east towards the Torre dei Lamberti. The Venetian Lion of St Mark is missing from the column because Verona became Austrian in 1797. Thürmer was an architect. After studying in Munich, he spent many years travelling, including in Italy and Greece. In 1827 he became a professor in Dresden. His interest in architecture can be seen in the drawing, but the figures are also handled with aplomb. As the sheet of Paper was too small for the depiction, Thürmer added a strip of paper on the right.
