The Castel dell' Ovo is located in the Bay of Naples directly in front of Mount Vesuvius. This View makes it possible to locate the painters position at the Belvedere di Sant' Antonio. In the tradition of a composed landscape painting, Ahlborn seems to have invented the foreground with ruins, rocks, grottos and lush plants as well as the flat landscape facing the sea. This also applies to the monk with a book, leaning against the rock. The blue of the sky is intense, reminiscent of the precious ultramarine pigment. Syntetic ultramarine pigments were available from the end of the 1820s, and it is possible that Ahlborn was an early user.
