In the beginning, the Lukasbrüder, the later Nazarenes, modelled for each other in the monastery of Sant Isidoro in Rome. They understood drawing as a collective practice, this is why the same coat can be found on many different sketches. Schadow reproduces Friedrich Overbeck here. On the reverse there is a second study of Overbecks head, slightly offset towards the edge. There is still enough free space available, which could have been supplemented with another coat study at a later date. The front and back thus show the exemplary practice as well as a personal connection.
