Enlightenment and Sensibility

Johann Christian Fiedler was known in Darmstadt above all for portraits and small-format genre scenes. The two portraits of children were finely painted on copper plates, giving the images a special lustre. The boy at the desk has forgotten his books and notebooks. Instead, he holds a nest and is immersed in carefully feeding the young birds. The small scene thus also contains an admonition to the boy neglectful of his duties.
