Tischbein’s Goethe in der Campagna was still hanging in a private collection when this copy of it was already on public view in Frankfurt. The painter Bennert had donated it to the Frankfurt Citizens Association. The original was produced while Goethe and Tischbein lived together in Rome. Almost lifesized, Goethe reclines in the wide expanse. The antique fragments he rests on, his posture, and the wide coat place him in the context of antiquity and refer to his work on Iphigenie.
