Italy

Hackert designed the two ideal landscapes in a comparable manner with large trees, staffage figures, and architectural elements and yet gives each a distinct character: whereas in this work he accentuates the antique buildings (Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Ponte Lucano, and the Plautian Tomb), the pendant is dominated by the open landscape. While here the horizon is visible to the sea, there the view is bounded by a mountain; here the atmosphere is determined by a fresh, cool tonality, there by the warm light of evening.
