Henry Fuseli

Most of Fuseli’s paintings are based on literary models. But in this case the motif cannot be determined. In a misty, undefined space a woman holds out her arm towards a bearded figure who merges wraithlike into the background. Another woman kneels on the ground with her arms around the first. On the left there is a sketched nude from behind, on the right another ghostlike figure. The grouping is reminiscent of Shakespeare’s King Lear but remains puzzling.
