Werther and Faust

In 1772 Goethe went as a trainee to the Imperial Chamber Court at Wetzlar, where he made the acquaintance of Charlotte Buff, and fell in love with the young woman, who was already engaged to be married. Goethe lived through a storm of feelings and let his experiences flow into his epistolary novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. The book became an immense success and Charlotte Buff and her fiancée, the models for Lotte and Albert, continued to be associated with the novel’s figures throughout their lives.
