Romanticism Exhibition

Message to Europe

This is one of the few early portraits of the writer, critic, and translator August Wilhelm Schlegel. It shows him in his early thirties, either during his Jena years or soon after moving to Berlin. Unlike most portraits showing the social status or erudition of their subjects, this painting by an unknown artist depicts Schlegel in the open air, with an alert gaze, a plain coat, and curls falling onto his forehead.
