In 1830, the Frankfurt Art Association published, as its annual gift, a lithograph of a drawing that had been exchanged as a personal gift between two young artists in 1812. At the beginning of their working and living community as the ‘Brotherhood of Saint Luke’, the founders Johann Friedrich Overbeck and Franz Pforr expressed their ideals of Italy and Germany, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the form of two female figures who overcome their differences through love. Overbeck also executed his drawing as a painting between 1815 and 1828, long after his friend’s death
