Chess with the king
The 6,5-metre-long picture story in 24 watercoloured drawings works like a leporello-style Advent calendar showing a different scene for each day leading up to Christmas. The poor little cousin is to help her aunts with the housework. She wins the affection of the animals and children of the house, but makes enemies of the adults. At the Christmas market, the girl helps out at a stall and successfully sells the most absurd gifts. A benefactor brings everything to a good ending and prepares a large Christmas celebration for the children, in which, however, the aunts are not allowed to take part. The fairy-tale comic strip is an example of Gisela von Arnim’s intensive collaboration with her future husband Herman Grimm, with whom she jointly created numerous fairy tales, including texts and illustrations.
