Enlightenment and Sensibility
The sewer is the spinner’s pendant. The walls of her middle-class room are decorated with pictures and the table is covered with a cloth. The young woman wears an embroidered wrap and a hairband. Her handiwork is done not to earn a living and instead belongs to the realm of women’s activities. But the atmospheric treatment of the space and the figures, the warm fall of light into the room with the highlights on the glass and clothing are executed by the painter similarly in both paintings.
