Enlightenment and Sensibility

The court painter Tischbein the Elder, also known as the Kasseler Tischbein, occupied a distinguished social position. In the splendid formal stateroom of his house, the double portrait of his daughters Amalie and Wilhelmine formed an ingenious wall decoration beside other scenes of figures. Within the architectural illusion, a young Black servant pulls aside the curtain to reveal a view of the “Orientally” dressed, ornamented young girls with a parrot and cockatoo.
