In addition to Trautmann, the painters commissioned by Count Thoranc while he was quartered at Goethe’s family house also included Christian Georg Schütz I and the Darmstadt painter Seekatz. His Kirchweihszene was made as a pendant to Trautmann’s Jahrmarktszene and was intended for the Thoranc family’s house in Grasse. Both paintings show country festivals filled with figures, with dancing and fighting and narrative details such as a commedia dell’arte troupe, an organ grinder, and a woman selling pastries.
