Goethe-Gallery

Workshops and Masters

During the French occupation of Frankfurt in the Seven Years’ War the Lieutenant-General François de Théas de Thoranc was quartered at the Goethe family’s house from January 1759 to May 1761. The art-loving count greatly appreciated Johann Caspar Goethe’s painting collection and during the time of his stay commissioned numerous regional artists to produce works for his palace in France. Both Trautmann’s Jahrmarktszene and Seekatz’s Kirchweihszene were among the commissions.
