Workshops and Masters

Another of Trautmann’s rare winter landscapes shows the ruins of a large castle complex in the bright daylight. The painter assembles several figures on the snow-covered bank of the frozen river and within the ruined walls. Here, too, Trautmann follows the principle of contrasts, by juxtaposing the hard winter and the destroyed architecture with the animated activity of the figures, thus introducing a narrative tone into the landscape.
