Cornelia’s Room

The portrait of the young man in ceremonial clothing (to the left of the clock) probably depicts Goethe at the age of around 16. The painting was supposedly made for Charitas Meixner, a childhood friend of Cornelia and Johann Wolfgang. The portrait above the commode shows Charitas Meixner herself in a silk dress with a fashionable pattern similar to that of the wallpaper. She holds a closed fan in her hand. Her friend Cornelia would have worn similar clothing and hairstyle. Like her, Charitas also died young, at the age of 27.
