Poet’s Room

The small silhouette shows Auguste Countess of Stolberg, one of the young Goethe’s important writing correspondents. He never met her personally but owned her silhouette. These kinds of silhouettes, which depicted a person’s profile, were very popular in the 18th century for they could be easily made and given away. In the row at the bottom, you can see the silhouettes of Auguste’s brothers, Counts Christian and Friedrich Leopold of Stolberg, who were also friends with Goethe.
