Here, for over 150 years, the Freies Deutsches Hochstift has been commemorating Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This was the site of the parental home of the great German poet, where he was born in 1749 – and which was destroyed during the Second World War. The faithful reconstruction attracts many people each year to his birthplace. Here you can experience the world where Goethe grew up and that he called home until 1775 – a world where epoch-making works of German literature were created.
Directly adjacent to the Goethe House is the German Romantic Museum. It introduces you to an era of cultural history that continues to have a lasting effect even today, and it offers a variety of insights into the extensive collections of the Freies Deutsches Hochstift. The Goethe Gallery on the first floor reflects Goethe’s life and his time in the medium of the visual arts; the Romanticism exhibition on the second and third floors leads you through the world of the Romantics.
