From the water’s coolness I drink embers
Brentano wrote this poem on the back of a theatre poster that announced the performance of two comedies by a French acting troupe. The poster probably came from Koblenz, which had its own theater. Brentano arranged the stanzas on three of the four sections formed by creases in the folded sheet. He crossed out words, made corrections, considered different formulations, and rotated the poster several times while writing.
