Clemens in plaster

One of Sophie and Clemens Brentano’s joint undertakings was to translate Spanish and Italian novellas into German. This draft was written in Sophie’s hand, then corrected and furnished with a title by Clemens. Their translations of the Spanish novellas by María de Zayas y Sotomayor came out in two volumes in 1804 and 1806. On account of Sophie’s death on 31 October 1806, however, the Italian novellas never saw publication.
