An English translation of part of the Grimms’ collection was published in 1823. Thanks to George Cruikshank’s illustrations, it was highly successful. Cruikshank emphasized the droll nature of the texts. His frontispiece shows a gentleman reading the tales out loud and laughing heartily with his audience. The first English translation inspired the Grimm brothers to produce a pocket-sized selection with copper engravings. This “small edition” of 1825 became a bestseller in Germany.
