Outpourings of the heart

The “divine Raphael” can be seen in an oval frame on the left, opposite the book’s title page. The engraving is based on a self-portrait of the artist from 1506. Portraits of Raphael – who was considered a handsome and sensitive soul – were made before Outpourings of an Art-Loving Friar, but they increased rapidly in number and variety after its publication. Engravings depicted his life, his portrait was referenced in other paintings, and artists based their own self-portraits on the “divine Raphael”.
