Physics as art
In 1798, Novalis made an entry in his Freiberg notebooks (left page, right column, lines 1–6): “Magnet(ism) is reversed electricity, and electr(icity) is reversed magnetism … No electricity without magnetism – no magnetism without electricity”. Johann Wilhelm Ritter shared this thought with Hans Christian Ørsted, who demonstrated the connection between electricity and magnetism experimentally in 1820.
