Günderrode hinted to Creuzer on several occasions that she could imagine a loving union in death. While composing this letter to him, she received a note in which he asked her to promise not to harm herself. Her tone in the letter now changes, and she laments his “reasonableness”, telling him: “Once, dying with me seemed very worthwhile to you”.
