The earliest surviving poem by Karoline von Günderrode describes the reunification of kindred spirits after death. Günderrode, who was 14 at the time, adapted lines by the poet Carl Gustav Brinckmann. As a symbol of Paradise, she adds a reference to the amaranth, a bright red flower that represented immortality in antiquity: “At the sound of angels’ songs, / Under Heaven’s amaranth, / We will all meet again / In virtue’s realm”.
