The man who sold his shadow
Between 1815 and 1818, Chamisso took part in a round-theworld voyage as a naturalist. The expedition was commissioned by the Russian count Nikolai Romanzov and led by the Baltic German sea captain Otto von Kotzebue. Ludwig Choris, a German-Russian artist, was also on board the brig Rurik. During the voyage, Choris drew and painted landscapes, animals, plants, everyday scenes, and portraits of island inhabitants. His drawings of the Rurik and of Chamisso reading in his cabin were made at the start of the trip. The interior he sketched matches Chamisso’s description of his quarters in Voyage Around the World (1836): a table stands opposite the fireplace, and on each side are two berths – “compartments made up as beds”. A ledge underneath serves “as a seat and makes space for drawers”.
