From 1823, after more than ten years’ preparation, Sulpiz Boisserée’s study of Cologne Cathedral was published simultaneously in French and German. The two editions differed only in their title pages and textual parts. Numerous illustrators and engravers were involved in this ambitious project, and Boisserée wrote the texts himself. The deluxe publication was produced elaborately: some of the oversize plates are hand-coloured, and the engravings are bound in a way that keeps the whole image visible.
