Strasbourg Cathedral has been described countless times by writers before and after Goethe. Although Goethe later characterized his early engagement with Gothic architecture as enthusiastic but theoretically uninformed, he consulted various sources when writing his architectural text. They included this book by the Alsatian physician Georg Heinrich Behr, first published in 1732 and reprinted several times. Goethe’s father had a copy in his library.
