How the Romantics put fear in our hearts
The Vampyre was first published in 1819 as A Tale by Lord Byron. The reference to the popular Lord Byron,
added without John Polidori’s knowledge, promoted sales. In Germany, Goethe even praised the work as Byron’s “best product”. Although Byron quickly corrected the false attribution, “Byron editions” of the story continued to be printed for a long time. This volume was released by the publishing house of Robert Schumann’s father.
