Goethe’s father had this small side “peephole” window built to see more of the street. When the children wanted to come home unobserved by their father they took the other side of the street, as Johann Wolfgang writes in Poetry and Truth.

At the window can be seen a printed portrait of Johann Caspar Goethe, which was published in 1777 in Lavater’s Physiognomische Fragmente.
