Goethe-House

Frau Rath’s Room

In the vitrine you can see tableware owned by the Goethe family such as the tea and coffee service painted with flowers by the Höchst porcelain manufactory, and the eggcups decorated with chickens. Founded in 1746, the Höchst porcelain manufactory, which displays the Mainz wheel as it trademark, is one of Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactories.

The small chocolate cups recall Frau Rat’s favourite drink, which – according to one source – she also requested on her deathbed. A unique feature of these cups is their lids, meant to prevent a skin from forming on the hot chocolate.
