Germania to Her Children
This print presents the digits of the year 1813 as symbols. The “1”, an ancient Roman fasces in black, red, and gold, stands for unity; the “8”, a snake biting its tail, for steadfastness; the second “1”, a sword, for strength; and the “3”, made of laurel leaves, for victory and peace. Printed below the ornamental date is the poem “Be a Sanctuary unto Posterity”, about the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig and the victory over Napoleon.
