Germania to Her Children
Achim von Arnim wrote this draft of the “Song of the German Table Society” for its founding meeting in Berlin on 18 January 1811, the Prussian monarchy’s 110th anniversary. It was also Arnim who, with Adam Müller, wrote the society’s founding charter. This restricted membership to “respectable” men ―Jews (even converts to Christianity) were barred from joining, as were women. Consistent with these ideas, the song invokes the “freedom of German Christian fidelity”, supposedly protected by the Prussian crown and nobility. Among the society’s members were Carl von Clausewitz, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Heinrich von Kleist, Friedrich Carl von Savigny, and Friedrich Schleiermacher.
