Romanticism Exhibition

Germania to Her Children

First published in Berlin in December 1813, this print was the most successful and most copied caricature of Napoleon. Its initial run of 20,000 sold out within a week. It was reprinted numerous times, and at least 23 different versions are known, some of which were published abroad. The edition shown here makes bold use of the colours black, red, and gold. Its symbolism is explained in a supplementary page.
