Romantic Painting Cabinet
Also beneath the full Italian moon, Carus looks into an attic room: The window is open, vines grown in, the night seems warmer, the clouds lie calmly above the dome of St. Peter’s and the cypress trees. Here someone is painting during the peaceful night. Above the easel the wall is covered with pictures. In a narrative way, Carus is describing the contrasts between Germany and Italy, Gothic and Renaissance, poetry and painting which were repeatedly and fruitfully juxtaposed in the art of Romanticism.
