Here someone is painting during the peaceful night. Above the easel the wall is covered with pictures. In a narrative way, Carus is describing the contrasts between Germany and Italy, Gothic and Renaissance, poetry and painting which were repeatedly and fruitfully juxtaposed in the art of Romanticism.
