Romanticism Exhibition

Romantic Painting Cabinet

In addition to biblical histories the other focus of Seidler’s work was portraiture. Already during her Roman period between 1818 and 1823 she produced portraits, occasionally life-sized, and she was especially sought-after in Weimar. The portraits of Ottilie Arnoldi and Julie Zschaler, both of 1832, are united by the empathetic grasp of their characters and the fine manner of painting. The choice of image section as well as the moody, light-filled views onto the landscape recall Renaissance portraiture.
