Chess with the king
An article published in several German newspapers in May 1844 reported on Bettine von Arnim’s planned book about poverty in Germany and appealed to readers to send her relevant material and “faithful accounts”. As a result, Arnim received lists of impoverished artisans, day labourers, and other destitute people from many regions in Germany, especially from Silesia. They document the extent of poverty at the time.
